Street lights statement from Basildon Council and Essex County Council
20 January 2014

ESSEX County Council will switch-off street lights across Basildon from midnight and five in the morning from Friday 31 January.

However, following discussions with Essex County Council it has been agreed that the lights will remain on in some of the borough’s housing estates until further work has been carried out to evaluate the impact of the switch-off.

Currently street lights will remain on in Five Links, Felmores, Langdon Hills, Chalvedon, Pitsea 1/2/3 and Craylands.

Cllr John Dornan, Basildon Council’s cabinet member for environment, said:

“We very much appreciate that the county highways has recognised that switching off street lights in residential areas is a major concern for us and are continuing to evaluate the impact this could have.”

Cllr Rodney L Bass, Essex County Council’s cabinet member for highways and transportation, added:

“We are keen to ensure that the implementation process of our part-night lighting scheme is sensitive to local needs, which is why we are following a process of consulting with all district, borough and city councils.

“We have considered the feedback from Basildon Council, and we are keen to receive any evidence that they can provide to allow further consideration of these housing estates.”
