|Competent Person Schemes have been in operation since 2002. They were introduced by the Government in an attempt to allow qualified tradesman, who are competent in their specialised line of work, the opportunity to self certify that their work complies with the Building Regulations and at the same time offer some protection to the homeowner against inferior workmanship.|
There are a number of Competent Person Schemes in operation covering electrical/gas installations and replacement glazing. Each scheme is overseen by a Governing Body who maintains a register of individuals and companies qualified to undertake the installation work. A current list of authorised governing bodies can be viewed by visiting the Department of Communities and Local Government.
Depending on the nature of work (electrical, gas, replacement glazing) a certificate will be issued for the installation, upon completion of the work by the appropriate Governing Body. The certificate is given to the homeowner for safe keeping, as it will assist them when selling the property at a future date.
